Narnia is a land of speaking animals and Gathering of the Clans is a work of art inspired by birds, talking...incessantly talking. Searching for interesting and playful juxtapositions is a common thread in Bruce Munro’s practice—and we see that here with a work that introduces irreverence into the formality of Montalvo’s Italianate Garden. It was originally inspired by the artist’s time in Australia and the cacophony of cockatoos that woke him each morning. Gathering of the Clans grows out of Munro’s imagining of 12 species of Australian cockatoos perched together on a Hills Hoist (or two-tiered Australian clothesline). He uses ultraviolet light to illuminate each clothes peg, which has been cut from fluorescent acrylic in a color scheme that represents each species of cockatoo.
