Bruce Munro received an iconic pink plastic lawn flamingo as a gift from his father who had just returned from traveling to the United States. The bird found a home in Bruce’s playroom, and fascinated him throughout his childhood. The use of these 1,000 specially commissioned white flamingos is a nod to Don Featherstone, the designer of the original pink flamingo. They allude to the flock of snow-white birds that, in C.S. Lewis’s Voyage of the Dawn Treader, flew each day at dawn to deliver a berry from the garden of the sun to Ramandu, an aged star, who had fallen from the sky. With each berry the birds delivered to Ramandu, he was rejuvenated, eventually transforming him back to a newly born star. Charmaine’s Garden Terrace at Montalvo is the site where these mythical birds, reflecting the ever-changing light of the sun, touch down on the table, laid with a feast, before delivering the berry to Ramandu.
