Lectures
Join us for presentations by artists, thought leaders, art historians, and curators as they speak about art, creativity, current events around the world, elucidating how the arts respond to and influence narratives. These events—which often include performance, music, and/or multimedia components—aim to provide fresh perspectives, enrich the audience with fascinating information, and foster an appreciation for different cultures, art forms, and approaches. In this year’s thought-provoking series, attendees will discover how light has been a form of expression across cultures and history, and draw meaningful connections to the exhibition Bruce Munro at Montalvo: Stories in Light.
Bruce Munro in Conversation
Saturday, October 27, 2018, 11am, $25 In celebration of his West Coast premiere, join artist Bruce Munro and Kelly Sicat, Director of the Lucas Artists Program, as they discuss the inspiration behind Munro’s most ambitious exhibition to date: Bruce Munro at Montalvo: Stories in Light. Munro will share his passion for light as a medium, and discuss the process by which he develops immersive light-based installations as a means to create a shared human experience. The artist will also discuss his love of the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and describe how Montalvo’s historic Villa embodies the imaginings of his childhood, which became the departure for this exhibition. Sicat and Munro will discuss works new, old, and those yet to be conceived, as they explore the artist’s process of gathering, in his notebooks, responses to stimuli such as music, literature, science, and the world around him for reference and reflection. |
